Meghan Markle is being branded a hypocrite after a resurfaced video showed her mocking expensive candles years before selling them on her lifestyle website.
“There are no $100 candles on my site – that’s so obnoxious,” Markle, 44, told the audience in 2016, during the Create & Cultivate conference in Atlanta while promoting her former blog, The Tig. “I just want things that like, that you can have.”
“I didn’t want MeghanMarkle.com. I don’t want this just to be me,” she added in the clip shared by Daily Express. “I want this to be a community much greater than that.”
Though Markle isn’t selling candles at the price point she initially deemed “obnoxious,” she has come under fire from critics for currently selling $64 candles, individually, from her As Ever brand. Meanwhile, she is also selling The Signature Scent Collection — which includes four candles and matches — for $256.
“She monetizes her fans. It’s embarrassing,” one social media user shared via Reddit.
“What is remarkable is that she even said that in the first place. She’s so judgemental [sic] of others and so full of herself. How nice to see her words catch up to her,” another wrote.
Another added, “I mean, she forgets what sweeping declaration she said yesterday, how much more hypocritical can she get when she contradict what she said a decade ago.”
Markle shut down her first blog in 2017 after her relationship with now-husband Prince Harry became public. As Ever, formerly known as American Riviera Orchard, was launched in 2024 as a place for the Duchess of Sussex to sell curated pieces of honey, candles, jams, and teas.
