What Happened in ‘A Simple Favor’?

A Simple Favor follows widowed single mommy-vlogger Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick), who strikes up an unexpected friendship with Emily Nelson (Lively), an enticing yet edgy upper-class mom.

When Emily suddenly goes missing after asking Stephanie to babysit her son, she begins investigating her disappearance, only to uncover dark secrets and a trail of crimes as she realizes she didn’t know the real Emily at all.

In the final act of the first film, it’s revealed that Emily faked her death in order to flee her marriage and her exorbitant debts and that she attempted to frame her husband, Sean (Henry Golding), for her past murders of her twin sister and her father.

With Stephanie’s clever detective work, Emily is caught and sentenced to 20 years in prison for her crimes.

What Is ‘Another Simple Favor’ About?

Five years after the events of A Simple Favor, there is still one more favor to ask.

According to the synopsis, after Emily mysteriously gets out of prison, the ex-friends “reunite on the island of Capri, Italy, for Emily’s extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman, which is interrupted by murder and betrayal.”

Stephanie quickly begins to suspect that Emily’s “good will is part of an elaborate plan for revenge” for her role in sending her to prison.

Who Stars in ‘Another Simple Favor’?

Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) and Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) will reprise their roles from the first film, alongside costars Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians), Andrew Rannells (Girls), Bashir Salahuddin (South Side), Joshua Satine (A Simple Favor) and Ian Ho (The Expanse).

Michele Morrone (365 Days), Elena Sofia Ricci (Loose Cannons), Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds), Alex Newell (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist) and Allison Janney (The West Wing) will also star in the black comedy whodunnit sequel.

Highlights From the Trailer for ‘Another Simple Favor’

Stephanie’s life explodes when Emily crashes her book reading event and reveals that she’s not only out of prison, but she’s also getting married and wants Stephanie to be her maid of honor at her lavish wedding in Italy.

But Emily clearly isn’t sold as she appears to put her old sleuthing skills to work at the wedding getaway to attempt to discover her ex pal’s true goal – and whether it involves her untimely death.

“To old friends and new beginnings,” Emily says in one moment as she and Stephanie both hold up their own glasses filled with a clear liquid.

“And not getting poisoned,” Stephanie adds, to which Emily only gives an ominous, “Hmm …”

Meanwhile, two women who are supposedly long-lost family members of Emily’s also show up to Capri for the wedding, begging the question: Why are they there and do they also have ulterior motives?

When Is ‘Another Simple Favor’ Coming Out?

Another Simple Favor made its world premiere at the SXSW film festival in Austin, Texas, in March 2025. It’s set to be widely released on Prime Video on May 1, 2025.
