The father of convicted murderer Mackenzie Shirillais coming under fire after his participation in the Netflix documentary The Crash, about his daughter’s intentional 2022 car crash.
Steve Shirilla appeared in the popular doc, which was released on May 15, and defended his daughter’s innocence despite the fact that she is currently serving two life sentences with the possibility of parole after 15 years for the murders of Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan.
19 News reported on Monday, May 18, that Steve has been placed on administrative leave from his position at Mary Queen of Peace School in Cleveland, Ohio, where he worked in the art and digital media department, per its website.
Steve confirmed off camera to the local news outlet that he was placed on leave and said that the school is doing an investigation.
According to WKYC Channel 3, the diocese said it is investigating “allegations of poor judgment made on social media by one of its teachers,” but they did not confirm the teacher’s identity.
Mackenzie, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident, crashed her car into a brick wall in the city of Strongsville, killing her boyfriend Dominic, 20, and his friend Davion, 19.
She was seriously injured at the time and taken to the hospital before eventually being charged in their murders.
Her car was reportedly speeding at almost 100 miles an hour before impact.

In The Crash, Steve — who told 19 News that he was unhappy with how the documentary was edited — maintained that his daughter is innocent, opened up about letting Mackenzie move in with Dominic as a teenager and admitted he didn’t “have a problem” with her “smoking dope.”
He also told the local news outlet that there is more to the story.
An email sent to parents, obtained by 19 News, said, “The investigation is ongoing. We want every parent and family to know that the safety, wellbeing, and trust of our students remain among our highest priorities. We take all student concerns seriously and are committed to responding promptly and responsibly whenever concerns are brought forward.”
“While we are limited in what we can share during an active personnel investigation, please know that we are reviewing the matter and will provide additional communication as appropriate,” the email added.
A parent at the school who asked to remain anonymous told 19 News, “As a parent I can understand the want to support and protect your daughter, however, I do think the way a lot of this was handled by the parents wasn’t tasteful.”
“The administrative leave he was placed on was not for actions he has done at the school itself and was as a result of the backlash of the community,” they noted.
