Fans Still Can’t Believe How Netflix’s ‘The Crash’ Blew Up Mackenzie Shirilla’s Dad’s Life Overnight
Netflix documentary The Crash exposes Steve Shirilla, who is placed on leave after controversial statements defending daughter Mackenzie Shirilla in the 2022 fatal crash case.
True crime fanatics are completely reeling after the release of Netflix’s latest documentary, The Crash, which debuted on May 15. While the film focuses on a tragic 2022 vehicular homicide case, it’s the driver’s father who is now facing an intense real-world firestorm. Steve Shirilla, an art teacher at Mary Queen of Peace School in Cleveland, Ohio, was suddenly placed on administrative leave just days after the program dropped. The academy chose to sideline him following immense public outrage over his jaw-dropping statements regarding his daughter’s lifestyle, substance habits, and legal innocence.
The documentary revisits the July 2022 incident where a then-17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla slammed her car into a brick wall at 100 miles per hour, instantly killing her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and friend, Davion Flanagan. While Judge Nancy Margaret Russo ultimately branded the teenager “literal hell on wheels” and handed down a lengthy prison sentence for murder, her parents fiercely reject that narrative. Bodycam footage captured the sheer scale of the tragedy, with an officer on the scene stating, “This is the worst crash I’ve ever seen.” The judge didn’t hold back during the trial, stating, “She had a mission, and she executed it with precision. The mission was death.” Using the streaming platform to voice their perspective, the elder Shirilla and his wife, Natalie, continue to insist the catastrophic wreck was merely a terrible medical accident, presenting a stark contrast to the court’s official findings. Even the driver herself spoke out from behind bars, maintaining, “I’m not saying I’m innocent — I was a driver of a tragedy. But I’m not a murderer.”
Viewers on Reddit and Facebook quickly went wild over what they saw as the total lack of parental boundaries exposed in the film. During his interview segments, Shirilla casually dismissed his daughter’s frequent marijuana habits, stating, “I knew she smoked dope. I don’t have a problem with her smoking dope.” He further expanded on his controversial stance by saying, “I don’t have a problem with me smoking it, I don’t have a problem with you smoking it. If you’re going to take a drug, that’s the one I believe you should take. It’s better than alcohol. It’s better than all the other crap. She’s not shooting up.” The educator further raised eyebrows by explaining that he permitted his underage child to move into a home with her 20-year-old partner because he believed she was “mature enough.” He flatly defended the decision, stating, “Even though she was 17, we felt she was mature enough to do that.”
Social media users were especially disgusted by a story he shared about his daughter being suspended from school, in which he admitted to simply accepting her denial and walking out. Describing the moment, he recalled, “I looked at my daughter, and she’s sobbing. I go, ‘Did you do it?’ She looked at me and goes, ‘No.’ And I know when my daughter lies. I go, ‘Good enough for me. Let’s go.’ And I walked her out.” Mackenzie’s mother also chimed in, adding, “She wasn’t a bad kid. She didn’t need to be disciplined a whole lot.” To make matters worse, fans noted his tone-deaf wardrobe choice: a t-shirt emblazoned with the word “BOOM” while discussing a fatal collision.

This severe blowback quickly crossed over into real life. Local television station 19 News confirmed that the father has been officially benched from his teaching position while school officials investigate the situation. According to a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, the school administration emphasized that it takes allegations of “poor judgment” very seriously. The community remains heavily divided over the decision; while some angry parents are calling for his permanent termination, an anonymous parent came forward to defend the teacher to local reporters, claiming he was a highly respected educator who is merely being punished for standing by his kid.
For his part, the embattled teacher isn’t staying quiet. He told off-camera reporters that he is deeply frustrated with the production’s storytelling methods, claiming that heavy editing has completely altered how his family is perceived and that a considerable amount of crucial context was left on the cutting-room floor. Still, critics point out that no amount of television magic could force those exact words out of his mouth. In her final on-camera remarks, Mackenzie also pleaded for the public to look at her lack of intent, tearfully stating, “I just want to make sure that I’m big on the no intent. There was no intent whatsoever there.”
As the comment sections continue to burn up, viewers are left asking a heavy question: Should a parent face professional ruin for expressing their unfiltered thoughts on television, or did the filmmakers deliberately manufacture a true-crime villain for ratings? For now, the Cleveland teacher remains in professional limbo as the world continues to debate his parenting skills.
