The pro basketball player, 35, appeared on the Thursday, May 28, episode of ex-fiancée Khloé Kardashian‘s Khloé in Wonder Land podcast, where the two discussed everything from coparenting to their tumultuous split.
The former couple, who had an on-off relationship for years before officially calling it quits in late 2021, share daughter True Thompson, 8, and son Tatum Thompson, 3.
During their time together, Thompson allegedly cheated on the Good American founder, 41, with Kylie Jenner‘s close friend Jordyn Woods, and he publicly apologized to his ex for fathering a child with Maralee Nichols when he and Kardashian were still together.
When Kardashian asked her ex if he has ever thought about what he will say to their kids when questions arise about what led to the couple’s split, he said he has.
“I’ve definitely thought about that, and like you said, it’s not about if [they will ask], it’s when,” Thompson said. “I think it just depends on which age we have this conversation — when I have this conversation with the kids — but I think it’s leading by being accountable.”
Explaining that it “depends on the age bracket” the kids will be in when they ask their father about how their parents’ breakup played out publicly in the media, Thompson said “the most important thing is accountability.”

He also emphasized that he would tell his kids “how much I love Mommy and go from there.”
“That’s all they want is honesty,” he said. “And love.”
The mother of two also asked her ex why he would repeat the same behavior if he knew he wasn’t proud of how he was acting. The father of four earned a reputation for being unfaithful in his relationships, and trust played a major factor in their breakup.
“That’s a trillion-dollar question,” Thompson said. “I don’t know. I mean, I can’t speak for other people.”
“For myself,” he said, “life was moving very quickly for me at the time when we were together. I probably didn’t do the best job of navigating my truth about where I was at. And maybe, just honestly, [it was] probably just a little case of being young and wanting your cake and eat[ing] it too.”
During the candid podcast episode, the reality TV star revealed she was the driving force behind the athlete’s choice to get a vasectomy.
“And who helped you fix that decision? That was me,” Kardashian said. “Tristan may have had a little ultimatum from me.”
