It’s hard to believe it’s been more than a decade since MTV premiered Teen Mom. The series started in 2009 as a spinoff of 16 & Pregnant, and the original cast featured Maci Bookout, Farrah Abraham, Catelynn Lowell and Amber Portwood. Season 1 documented their journeys as teenage mothers, and they continued to share their stories as their families grew.

The show would be rebranded as Teen Mom OG in its fifth season. After Farrah left the show in 2017, two new faces were added to the cast to replace her. The Challenge star Cheyenne Floyd and Bristol Palin, the daughter of former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin, joined during season 7. But Bristol only lasted one season before deciding the show wasn’t a good fit for her and her family.

“It took away my peace … and honestly, my peace has a price tag that no one but God can afford,” the MTV alum wrote in a statement posted to Instagram in April 2019. “[Money] doesn’t impress me, I don’t entertain [bulls–t], and walking away from this show allows God to rebuild me (and my little fam) in the right direction.”

After Bristol left, she was replaced by Mackenzie McKee. Meanwhile, Cheyenne “just fit in so perfectly” with the rest of the cast on the show, Catelynn exclusively told In Touch in April 2020. She went on to gush about her bond with the rest of the OG cast, Maci and Amber.

“I think it just comes from like, I haven’t experienced this lifestyle and the things that we share on camera and things like that with anybody else. And so, we just get each other on a different level. [They] understand things that my other friends won’t understand.”

The success of Teen Mom OG would lead to the spinoff Teen Mom 2 in 2011. The original cast featured Kailyn Lowry, Jenelle Evans, Chelsea Houska and Leah Messer. Briana DeJesus was added to the cast for season 8, and Jade Cline replaced Jenelle after she left the series during season 9B.

In December 2020, production sources told People that Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant alum Ashley Jones would be joining the cast following Chelsea’s exit from the franchise.

While making her departure after a nearly 11-year run, Chelsea revealed she wanted to spend more time with her family and pursue other passions but said she would always look back fondly on her experience.

“We are forever thankful to MTV and our crew, who are like family to us,” she wrote via Instagram. “We’re parting on the best of terms and will stay in touch long after this. We’re proud to have been able to share our story and are so grateful to the fans who have followed our journey from the beginning.”
