98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey revealed one cringey way the band protected themselves while on tour.
“This is going to sound super shady but when we first went out — I remember in our first tour — someone at the label gave us a book,” Lachey, 52, said in Investigation Discovery’s Boy Band Confidential, according to Us Weekly. “It was the age of consent in every state in the country.”
The Love Is Blind host added, “We kept that book on the tour bus. Unfortunately, there were people out there looking to tear you down.”
Lachey, along with brother Drew Lachey, Jeff Timmons and Justin Jeffre, competed with ‘NSync and Backstreet Boys for the top boy band of the early 2000s.
“Anybody who has listened to Backstreet’s album, our album and ‘N Sync’s album will definitely see that there are major differences musically between groups, not to mention the fact that we were signed to Motown, which gives us a little more credibility as far as R&B and soul music goes,” he told the Chicago Tribune in 1999.

Lachey — who was famously wed to Jessica Simpson from 2002 to 2006, before marrying Vanessa Lachey in 2011 — went on to release two solo albums during the band’s hiatus.
Boy Band Confidential will feature appearances from ‘NSync’s Joey Fatone and Lance Bass, Backstreet Boys’ AJMcLean, O-Town’s Ashley Parker Angel and more. The doc premieres on Investigation Discovery Monday, April 13.
