Daveigh Chase’s cause of death has been revealed to be AIDS.
On Monday, June 29, TMZ reported that the L.A. County Medical Examiner listed the former child star’s primary cause of death to be acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Additionally, chronic polysubstance use was listed as a significant condition, per the outlet.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, polysubstance use disorder “is using more than one substance and following a pattern of use that affects your health and quality of life.”
Chase’s longtime manager, John Ryan, told the outlet he learned about the video in late 2025 and that he and Chase’s step-sister, Gaia Brown, had been working with a private investigator to locate her and get her into rehab.
“We were so close to finding her,” Ryan remarked. “Daveigh was the sweetest and brightest light in Hollywood. I can’t believe this is real. Her legacy and work will live on forever.”
Meanwhile, the Donnie Darko actress’s father, John David Schwallier, told The New York Times in an article published on Wednesday, June 17, he hadn’t spoken to his daughter since she was 19 and that she “had struggled with drugs since the age of 13.”
