Matt Lauer has declined an opportunity to speak out about his banishment from the public eye, Rob Shuter reported in his Naughty But Nice Substack on Monday, February 23.
Sources told Shuter that Armie Hammer’s mother, Dru, offered the disgraced Today host, 68, a chance to tell his side of the story on her new podcast, Hollywood and Divine, in which she offers a platform to people who “have been through major traumas, major trials, maybe canceled, and they had no voice,” she said in an Instagram post on Sunday, February 22.
But Lauer said no, one insider told Shuter, because “he thinks this hurts him, not helps him. He’s not signing up for a ‘canceled men’ redemption tour.”
“Matt’s plan has always been silence. He believes the more you talk, the more oxygen you give the fire,” a media source added, noting that “podcasts hosted by moms of men still battling scandal” wouldn’t be a good idea.

The Call My By Your Name actor, 39, was accused of sexual abuse by multiple women in 2021. He’s denied the allegations, insisting that all of his encounters with the women were consensual, and no charges were filed. However, his career has never recovered.
Lauer, who has vehemently denied accusations of rape by a former NBC producer — and has also called their relations consensual — “wishes [Dru] would stop saying his name,” another insider told Shuter.
“He’s trying to rebuild quietly.” the insider added. “This pulls him straight back into the storm.”
