Former Today anchor Katie Couric is sharing her thoughts on the predicament the show has found itself in with Savannah Guthrie away indefinitely as authorities continue the search for her missing mother, Nancy.
Savannah, 54, stepped away from the morning talk show after her mother, 84, went missing on the evening of February 1. Since then, former anchor Hoda Kotb has been filling in for her.
Speaking to Variety in an article published on Thursday, February 26, Couric — who was an anchor on Today from 1991 to 2006 before shifting over to CBS — offered her thoughts on what the staff must be going through as well as the appearance of Kotb.
“This situation is tragically unprecedented, and I think it’s really hard to compare anything else to what Savannah and her family are dealing with right now,” Couric told the outlet. “I do think morning shows are living, breathing organisms, and when something happens to a member of these very close-knit teams, it is devastating, I think, to everyone.”

“I think the Today Show team is doing the best they possibly can, and it must be excruciating to try to carry on, but also to cover a story about a beloved colleague,” she continued.
“They are fortunate that Hoda, who is a familiar and beloved face, is able to step in so seamlessly under very difficult circumstances,” Couric added. “I think they are trying to handle it as well as they possibly can.”
The search for Nancy has been going on for almost a month and investigators have been looking into it as a kidnapping. In Touch previously reported that the FBI is reportedly in communication with Mexican authorities. Officials have not confirmed whether she may have been taken across the border, but the area her home is located is very close to Mexico.
