During Sara’s Tuesday, June 30, appearance on the Let’s Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari podcast, the 45-year-old had nothing but nice things to say about her father’s wife, who is three years younger than her.
“She’s really amazing,” Sara told podcast host Kristin Cavallari. “It’s not easy coming into this family.”
The American Idol runner-up, 42, tied the knot with 76-year-old record producer — who is 34 years her senior — on June 28, 2019. They share 5-year-old son Rennie David.
Despite Katharine and David’s age gap, Sara said it doesn’t matter what others think because they are “happy.”
“She’s a fully consenting lady,” Sara said of the Smash alum. “This is not like some child bride. She is in her 40s.”
Discussing their relationship, Sara acknowledged, “I think it’s hard being a stepparent, obviously. I think you want to ride the line of wanting your partner’s kids to like you and wanting to show up as a motherly figure, but you also have to have respect for the…biological mom, and I think it’s a tough balance.”

“I think she does it really well,” she added of McPhee.
When Cavallari, 39, asked Sara if she views McPhee as more of a “sister,” she said, “I look at her as a sister, but she is my stepmom. She’s my dad’s wife.”
For Father’s Day in 2022, McPhee thanked her husband for making her a mom.
“Happy Father’s to the man @davidfoster who loves me like I could have only dreamed of & who made me complete in life by making me a mommy,” she captioned an Instagram photo of them with baby Rennie.
“I love our little family. I love our big family,” she added. “You have NEVER complained over how your life is slightly different now. Well… you only complain that you can’t stay up late watching TV in bed but how can I blame you -that’s your favorite thing. You’ve only made bringing Rennie into the world an absolute joy for me. To many more adventures baby! 🎊I love you to the moon and back.”
