After the Grease star, 72, went viral for his look at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where he looked sharp in a cream-colored beret on the red carpet alongside daughter Ella Bleu, 26, he admitted that he really enjoyed the attention.
“I love it,” he told People at the New York City premiere of his film Propeller One-Way Night Coach on Thursday, May 21. “Once Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar voted me the best dressed at Cannes, I went, ‘Okay, we’ve arrived.'”
His Cannes ensemble — which included a black three-piece suit with a white shirt and tie as well as silver-rimmed glasses — was “an homage to being a director,” he explained.
“I wanted to differentiate all these years of watching me in photos,” he said, explaining that he wanted his Cannes look to have “an identity to the time and the place and the form and event.”
In an interview with CNN, the actor explained more about why he decided to sport the stylish headwear.
“The old-school directors wore berets and the glasses, and I thought that’s what I’m doing,” he told the news outlet. “I said, ‘I’m a director this time. You’re an actor, play the part of a director.'”
Travolta said that he looked up pictures of directors at the time to find inspiration for his wardrobe. “I’m going to do an homage to being a director, so I’m going to play the part,” he said.
Propeller One-Way Night Coach, directed by Travolta — in his directorial debut — stars Clark Shotwell, Kelly Eviston-Quinnett, his daughter Ella Bleu and Olga Hoffmann as well as Travolta himself.
