As the search for Savannah Guthrie’s mom, Nancy Guthrie, stretches on with no major leads, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is facing some harsh criticism regarding how he’s handled the case so far.

Former Pima County SWAT Bob Krygier appeared as a guest on the Surviving the Survivor podcast on Wednesday, March 4, and said he felt like Nanos’ communication to both his team and the public “has done more harm than good” for the investigators.

“He is not the best one to deliver those messages most times,” Krygier said. “He gets wrapped up in his thoughts and he gets emotional. Even if he’s not getting pushback, he sometimes just repeats himself over and over and over. We’ve seen that.”

He added that even though some people “think this is some backwoods agency that doesn’t really know what they’re doing,” because of the way Nanos has “portrayed it.”

“We did a morale poll a couple of years ago. Ninety-eight percent of the department gave a vote of no confidence to the sheriff for various reasons,” Krygier claimed. “Think about that number. So we have roughly 450 commissioned officers.”

He continued, “We’re not a small agency, this isn’t Mayberry. We need to do better. You look at those numbers, it was given to him, and you know what he did to that note? He ignored it.”

Nancy, 84, was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home in Arizona on January 31, after her daughter Annie Guthrie and son-in-law Tommaso Cioni dropped her off. Nanos previously said that the state of Nancy’s home was “seriously concerning,” but since then, there have been very few leads.

The Today anchor, 54, and her family have offered a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s recovery.

The FBI has urged anyone with information about her disappearance to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324). You may also contact your local FBI office, the nearest American Embassy or Consulate, or you can submit a tip online at tips.fbi.gov.
