Brendan Dassey Scores Major Win in Federal Court

Brendan Dassey and his uncle Steven Avery were jailed in 2007 for the murder of Teresa Halbach — but today Brendan, whose story was documented on Netflix’s series Making a Murderer, had his conviction overturned.

According to E! News, it was determined by the federal appeals panel that the Making a Murderer subject's "confession was coerced."

"We are overjoyed for Brendan and his family, and we look forward to working to secure his release from prison as soon as possible. As of today’s date, Brendan Dassey has lost 4,132 days of his life to prison," his legal team stated via ABC.

Back in November, his pre-trial attorney Len Kachinsky told In Touch exclusively that he did not "feel in any way responsible for Dassey being in prison," and that he felt Brendan would "never leave prison or he will be back in prison within minutes or hours.”

Fans of the Netflix documentary, which will return for Season 2, now cannot help but wonder what this means for Steven — who has also been in contact with In Touch exclusively regarding the case.

“I’m 1,000 percent confident that I’ll be free,” he said back in August. “[His lawyer] Kathleen Zellner is the best. I don’t think there’s a lawyer in Wisconsin that could top her, and her record shows it. I know Kathleen will get down to the truth. I’m not going to lose.”

He has also blamed his former lawyers Dean Strang and Jerome Buting for being found guilty because they “didn’t do no [sic] investigation on this case," Steven claimed.

“Dean and Jerome are bad attorneys," he wrote in July. "They don’t now what Justice is and they don’t now what is an investigation is because if they did they would have done it for an innocent man like me!"

It will be interesting to see what happens next.
