The Netflix megahit Making a Murderer made Steven Avery a household name last winter and sparked a national debate about his conviction for the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach. Now, the Wisconsin native is revealing exclusively — in a handwritten letter to In Touch — the evidence that he says is going to exonerate him in a highly anticipated appeal led by his new attorney, Kathleen Zellner.

Avery, who is serving life without the possibility of parole, says that he blames his former lawyers Dean Strang and Jerome Buting for his guilty verdict because they “didn’t do no investigation on this case, if they did I would not be in prison.”

In his letter, Avery blasts the defense’s failure to call forensic experts at the trial to weigh in on key evidence, like the lack of blood splatter in his garage (where he allegedly shot Teresa, 25) and the botched processing of Teresa’s charred bones.

Strang and Buting argued that Teresa’s car key was planted inside Avery’s home by cops, but Avery states, the lawyers failed to test the validity of the police department’s explanation — something a simple reenactment could have easily disproved.

He also alludes to the online theory that there were six burn barrels found on or near his family’s property, not five as stated in reports. If this is true, then Buting and Strang missed an opportunity to point out even more sloppy police work — which could have called all the evidence the prosecution presented from the barrels into question.

“Dean and Jerome are Bad Attorneys,” claims Avery. It’s the first time he’s publicly slammed the defense attorneys since they went on an international speaking tour after unexpectedly gaining fame from their positive portrayal in the documentary.

“They don’t now what Justice is and they don’t now what is a investigation is because if they did they would have done it for a innocent man like me!!!” he writes.
