In 2001, 24-year-old Chandra Levy — a career-driven woman, determined to get a job in Washington, D.C. — vanished without a trace. At the time, her murder dominated the national news and went unsolved for nine years. It wasn't until 2010 that Ingmar Guandique was convicted of killing her, but when secret recordings from a new source came to light, charges against him were dropped. Now people are left wondering once more, who killed Chandra Levy?

Chandra Levy: An American Murder Mystery premiered Monday night on TLC, and re-created scenes and interviews with key figures in one of the most infamous cases of the 21st century. Joe McCann, a private investigator who was hired by Chandra's family attorney in 2001, hoped the documentary would compel someone with information to come forward. He told Fox News, "…Over time, people have a conscious and want to talk about something they saw [or] heard that they didn’t feel comfortable talking about several years ago. Now it’s their opportunity to do so and regrettably, I would say it’s probably the last opportunity. I can’t see this case getting publicity another 10 years from now."

Chandra's parents, Susan and Bob Levy, are interviewed on Larry King Live in August 2001.

He also wondered if someone had hinted at a lead years ago but he and his team missed it. He continued, "I hope we didn’t miss a valuable lead because there were so many things coming in. And so, if we did miss it, maybe somebody out there will say, 'You know, I called. I left them that information and they never spoke to me…' It's always bothered me that maybe we did miss something."

In 2010, Ingmar Guandique, an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador who previously attacked female joggers in Rock Creek Park around the time Levy went missing, was convicted and sentenced to 60 years in prison. However, in 2015, a new trial was ordered based on what Ingmar's defense team said was new evidence. A year later, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C. dismissed the case and cited "unforeseen developments." Earlier this year, the Washington Post revealed he was deported.

Now, only one suspect remains, at least in the eyes of Chandra's mother, Susan. Former California Congressman, Gary Condit — who she said had an affair with her daughter, despite him being married — is "guilty." After his interview with ABC News in 2001, Susan told 20/20, "I wasn’t sure if he was really all honest," she said. "He acted… not confident and a little bit shocked. I felt that he was kind of, like, guilty of something. That he was caught in something," she said. "And I don’t think it was just necessarily because he was caught in an affair." Unfortunately, despite it being more than 16 years later, her family is left with more questions than answers. Susan added, "We thought we had the truth [with] Guandique, now I feel like I’m back to not knowing… If he didn’t do it, then who did kill my daughter?"
