What Was UHC CEO Brian Thompson’s Net Worth?
Thompson’s net worth was approximately $43 million, according to Wallmine, per Daily Beast. Wallmine reported that Thompson’s net worth allegedly included over 72,000 units of UnitedHealth Group stock, valued at around $42.9 million, and stock options that were worth over $21 million. The Daily Mail reported that Thompson earned around $10 million per year with his salary at United Healthcare.
What Did UHC CEO Brian Thompson Do for a Living?
Thompson had only served as the CEO of United Healthcare for the past three years, according to his profile on LinkedIn.
“I was named chief executive officer for UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. UnitedHealthcare, which employs nearly 140,000 people across the United States and globally, is part of UnitedHealth Group, ranked sixth in the Fortune 500,” Thompson wrote in the About section on the profile. “Prior to this role, I served as chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare’s government programs business including Medicare & Retirement, the largest business dedicated to the health and well-being needs of seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries; and Community & State, which provides health care products and services to states that care for the economically disadvantaged, the medically underserved and those without the benefit of employer-funded health care coverage.”
Thompson joined United Healthcare in 2004 and before he led several of the government programs for the company, he was the CEO of the Medicare & Retirement organization. Before he was employed at UHC, Thompson was a CPA at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
What Happened to UHC CEO Brian Thompson?
Thompson was fatally shot outside of a Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on 54th Street between 6th and 7th avenue. The shooting happened shortly before 7 a.m. and he was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He was 50 years old.
The identity of the shooter remains unknown and the suspect is still at large at the time of publication. However, people who witnessed the incident said that the individual’s face was obscured by a black mask and he was carrying a gray backpack. After killing Thompson, the suspect fled into an alleyway nearby.
News 8 WTNH reported that the “UnitedHealthGroup was scheduled to start its annual Investor Conference at 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to the company.”
The day following Thompson’s murder, TMZ reported that shell casings from the gun were found and had “deny,” “defend” and “depose” written on them. The words were just slightly altered from a 2010 book, Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.
On December 5, 2024, the New York Police Department released new photos of the suspected murderer. In the images, the suspect could be seen with a smile on his face. The pictures were taken from an Upper West Side youth hostel, and police believe the man may have been staying there prior to the shooting.
