New details have emerged in David Turpin and Louise Ann Turpin's child abuse case. The couple was arrested last month after authorities discovered that they were holding their 13 children captive in their Perris, CA home. David and Louise were initially charged with torture, abuse, and false imprisonment charges, but after they appeared in Riverside Superior Court on Friday, Feb. 23, they were faced with new charges.

David and Louise' complaint has since been amended after the new details were found. They are both facing three new child abuse charges and Louise is now facing a felony assault charge, according to People. Though no further details have been revealed, assault is defined by the California Penal Code as an "unlawful attempt" to cause a "violent injury on the person of another."

"Further investigation has led us to amend the complaint," Riverside County District Attorney PIO John Hall said. "It could add more time to the exposure they are facing." Both David and Louise pled not guilty to the new charges.

After suffering years of abuse, the Turpin's 17-year-old daughter managed to escape their home and she ran to the authorities for help. When police arrived at the home to investigate, they found the 17-year-old's 12 siblings allegedly shackled to their beds. The Turpin children — ranging in ages from 2 to 29 — all showed signs of abuse and David and Louise had allegedly refused to feed them, which is why many of them were so emaciated that it was hard to distinguish their ages at first. It is believed that David and Louise were able to get away with such abuse for so long because the children were all homeschooled.

Now the 13 children are being cared for and are working on recovering from all of the abuse that they endured at the hands of their parents, and they are all expected to testify in the upcoming trial. David and Louise are due back in court next month.
