David, 61, told wife Christine, 53, “I blame myself,” during the Sunday, May 11, episode while discussing Kody Brown and Janelle Brown’s son Garrison Brown’s death by suicide in March 2024. The episode was filmed in the aftermath of Garrison’s passing.
“My wife, my kids’ mother, she took her life. One of the hardest things I’ve ever done was to tell my kids that their mother wasn’t coming home,” he recalled while speaking out about the devastating loss of his late spouse.
David and his first wife, Margaret Woolley, shared eight children together. They were married for 20 years before her death in 2012.
The construction company owner said that at the time, he turned to his sister, asking “What do I do?” David continued, “She’s like, ‘You need to tell them.’ And I told them. It was the hardest thing, crying, realizing that she wasn’t coming back,” he said while on the verge of tears.
“I felt like I let my kids down,” David added. Christine could feel her husband’s pain.
“Their mom was really special. I’ve seen enough of David’s home videos [to know],” the TLC star confessed. “She loved her kids and there’s so many happy moments and happy memories. I’m glad they have the home videos of them, so they remember because I think without those, I think they forget because it’s so sad.”
David touched on his first wife’s suicide when introducing himself to fans in July 2023, three months after he and Christine got engaged.

”Hello! I’m sorry I have not let people know who I am yet. I have 8 kids. 6 are married and 2 are single! I have 10 grandchildren. I also have kids and grandkids in California that are my extended family, but I consider my own! Half of my kids do not want to be in the spotlight, so I’m respecting their wishes, and you won’t see their faces on here,” he wrote in the caption of an Instagram carousel of photos showing some of his children and grandchildren.
“I was married to their mother for 20 years when depression got a hold of her. So, I have been a single dad for 11 years,” he added.
David went on to reveal he had dated in the years since his first wife’s tragic death but things “never went” anywhere. “I wish I could show all of my family because I’m very proud of all my kids. So, this is a little bit about me, I’m glad to be here! And I’m really excited to be with Christine the future is really bright!!” he added.
Christine and David met in late 2022 via a matchmaker and she revealed to fans she was dating again in a February 2023 Instagram post. The longtime Sister Wives star split from Kody, 56, in November 2021 after more than 25 years in a spiritual marriage. The exes share six children.
The couple married in a gorgeous October 2023 ceremony in Moab, Utah. Christine and David went on to purchase a condo in the scenic town, which they turned into a successful Airbnb.
Christine recalled how happy she was that Garrison was present to see her marry David, saying, “I’m so glad he came to our wedding,” revealing, “nothing’s the same” since his death by suicide.
Garrison was 25 years old when he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Flagstaff, Arizona.
The couple went on to share how they planted a willow tree in the backyard of their home in Garrison’s honor, in case they “need to talk” to him.
