Savannah Guthrie is tearfully opening up for the first time about her mother Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance and forcefully shutting down rumors that her own family members may have been involved.
In an emotional sit-down interview with her friend Hoda Kotb, which aired on Thursday, March 26 on Today, 54-year-old Savannah addressed speculation that surfaced in the early days of the investigation, calling it “unbearable.”
“It piles pain upon pain. There are no words,” Savannah told Kotb between tears.
“I’ll never understand. And no one took better care of my mom than my sister and brother-in-law. And no one protected my mom more than my brother. We love her and she is our shining light. She’s our matriarch. She’s all we have,” Savannah said of her sister Annie Guthrie, her brother-in-law Tommaso Cioni, and her brother, Camron Guthrie.
In the days after Nancy was reported missing on February 1, rumors swirled — particularly around Cioni — suggesting a possible connection to the 84-year-old’s disappearance.
Savannah said she hopes the speculation can finally be put to rest.

“I hope at least with people of good heart and compassion stop the irresponsible and cruel speculation that had started to swirl. I’m glad that people saw what came to our door,” she continued.
She also described the chaotic and frightening weeks her family spent together in Arizona following Nancy’s disappearance, saying they were forced to shuffle between multiple homes due to unwanted attention from the public.
“We had to move houses many times because people came and not everyone is respectful unfortunately, you know? There was a night we had to leave in the dark in the desert holding hands, me and my sister, brother and I, get into a car waiting for us, because the people outside were closing in,” the Today host recalled. “So, we found a place that was safe and then we couldn’t really leave too much so those days are a blur. Crying and praying.”
Nancy was reported missing on February 1 after she failed to show up to a friend’s home to watch a streaming church service. Weeks later, doorbell footage showed a masked man on her front porch in the middle of the night, though few additional details have been released. Savannah confirmed the investigation is “still going.”

“People have worked tirelessly, tirelessly. And we see that. But we need answers. We cannot be at peace without knowing and someone can do the right thing. It is never too late to do the right thing. And our hearts are focused on that.”
