Peter Jackson Breaks His Silence After Ryan Gosling Says He Recast Him After 60-Pound Weight Gain
Peter Jackson reveals why Ryan Gosling was recast in The Lovely Bones, taking blame for his exit and explaining the creative mismatch behind the scenes.
Peter Jackson is finally clearing the air regarding a decades-old Hollywood mystery. While attending the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, the legendary director addressed the rumors about why Ryan Gosling was suddenly dropped from the 2009 thriller The Lovely Bones. For years, the public believed that Gosling lost the role of Jack Salmon because he packed on 60 pounds, but Jackson is now sharing a very different side of the story. According to Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker admitted he “got it wrong” with the initial casting and took full blame for the production mismatch.
The director was quick to explain that the fault for the last-minute switch lay with the production team, not the actor himself. Jackson told journalist Didier Allouch that whenever an actor is recast, it is usually because the creators didn’t get the “gel” right during the planning stages. “It’s actually our fault because we didn’t get the casting right and we cast the wrong person for a role,” Jackson noted, adding that it isn’t because the performer did anything incorrectly. He praised Gosling as a “fantastic” talent but explained that movie-making depends on a complex chemistry that sometimes just doesn’t manifest as imagined.
Gosling’s original explanation for his exit was quite a bit more physical and involved some extreme dieting choices. Back in 2010, the Barbie star told The Hollywood Reporter that he felt his character should weigh roughly 210 pounds to look the part of a distressed parent. To hit that target, Gosling famously revealed that he would “melt Haagen Dazs and drink it” whenever he felt thirsty. However, when he arrived on the set after his weight gain, he realized that he and the director had completely “different ideas” about the character’s aesthetic. Gosling joked at the time that he ended up “fat and unemployed” due to a lack of communication during the pre-production process.

The film’s lead actress, Saoirse Ronan, has also shared her perspective on the awkward casting shakeup over the years. During a 2024 appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, she mentioned that she had spoken with both men and felt the reasons for the split were “totally valid.” Ronan explained that it wasn’t a personal jab, but rather a case of the team simply not being on the same page creatively. She also pointed out that Mark Wahlberg, who eventually took over the role, was a more natural fit because he was in his late 30s, while Gosling was still in his 20s at the time.
Jackson’s wife and close creative partner, Fran Walsh, also provided behind-the-scenes details suggesting Gosling was never fully settled into the role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Walsh recalled that Gosling approached the producers multiple times in the early stages, saying he felt he was “too young” for the part. While the team tried to convince him that they could use hair thinning and makeup to make him look older, it became obvious during rehearsals that he was too uncomfortable to continue. Walsh admitted that the team’s “blindness” and deep desire to make the casting work led to the stressful last-minute change.
Despite the early drama, both the star and the filmmaker have seen their careers reach incredible heights since the 2007 production. Gosling’s latest project, Project Hail Mary, has already smashed box office records by earning over $600 million globally. Meanwhile, Jackson remains one of the most respected figures in cinema, with his latest appearance at Cannes drawing massive attention this week.
