Meryl Streep Responds to Rose McGowan’s Claims That She Stayed Silent About Harvey Weinstein

After Rose McGowan slammed Meryl Streep not once, but twice over her response to the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal, the three-time Oscar winner hit back with a statement of her own. In a since-deleted tweet sent over the weekend, Rose shamed any woman who plans to wear black to the Golden Globes on Jan. 7.

"Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @goldenglobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You'll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real chance. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa," the 44-year-old wrote. The fashion line Marchesa was co-founded by Harvey's estranged wife, Georgina Chapman.

Meryl told HuffPost on Dec. 18, "It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein's crimes, not in the 90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others. I wasn't deliberately silent. I didn't know. I don't tacitly approve of rape. I didn't know. I don't like young women being assaulted. I didn't know this was happening."

She continued, "Rose assumed and broadcast something untrue about me, and I wanted to let her know the truth. Through friends who know her, I got my home phone number to her the minute I read the headlines. I sat by that phone all day yesterday and this morning, hoping to express both my deep respect for her and others' bravery in exposing the monsters among us, and my sympathy for the untold, ongoing pain she suffers… And I hoped that she would give me a hearing. She did not, but I hope she reads this." In response to Meryl's claims that she tried to reach her, Rose put a laughing face emoji on Twitter.

The Charmed alum had previously blasted the 68-year-old after she called Harvey's actions "the most gargantuan example of disrespect." "No, Meryl, IT’S A F–KING CRIME. You are such a lie," she tweeted on Dec. 8.

Fellow actress Amber Tamblyn has since criticized Rose for her most recent remarks. "Rose McGowan is a friend and while I support her kind of movement, I do not support any woman (or man) shaming or taunting the movements of other women who are trying to create change," she shared. "Telling us to all wear Marchesa? This is beneath you, Rose."

The controversial star apologized on Dec. 18 for mentioning the brand. "The Marchesa line was beneath me and I'm sorry for that," she wrote. "Seeing that picture of [former co-star] Alyssa Milano with GC has ignited something in me that I can't quite articulate."

Rose had seemingly shamed Alyssa for remaining friends with Georgina following the scandal. "You make me want to vomit," she wrote of her one-time pal on Twitter. This is one twisted web of feuds Rose has weaved.
