HOLLIDAYSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA - DECEMBER 10: Luigi Mangione is led into the Blair County Courthouse for an extradition hearing December 10, 2024 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Luigi Mangione, the man charged in New York with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, yelled about “injustice in the system” while being escorted into his extradition hearing on Tuesday, December 10.

“It’s completely out of touch. It’s an insult to the intelligence of the American people,” Mangione, 26, could be heard shouting as police escorted him inside the Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, according to News Nation national correspondent Alex Caprariello.

It’s unclear what Mangione was referring to.

Footage of the moment shared by The Recount on X showed Mangione getting out of a police vehicle with a seemingly calm demeanor. However, as police began escorting him to the building, he turned back and began shouting. Mangione appeared to put up a struggle as his escorts attempted to keep him under control.

Mangione’s hearing comes after his arrest on Monday, December 9, in Pennsylvania. His hearing on Tuesday could lead to an extradition to New York City, where the December 4 shooting of Thompson, 50, took place.

Mangione was denied bail during the court appearance and is fighting his extradition, according to CNN. He was given 14 days to file for writ of habeas corpus, which someone can do if they believe they are being unlawfully detained. A hearing will be scheduled if he does file. Until then, Mangione will be held at Huntingdon State Correctional Institution in Pennsylvania. Prosecutors will have 30 days to obtain a governor’s warrant, the outlet reported.

Five days after the UnitedHealthcare CEO’s murder, Mangione was apprehended in a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and named a person of interest in the shooting. Multiple patrons inside the restaurant had recognized the suspect, prompting the store manager to contact local authorities.

Mangione allegedly had a gun and silencer that were similar to the ones used in the shooting. He also had a fake New Jersey ID, which had reportedly been used to check into a New York City hostel days before the murder.

“Because of that, we believe we have a strong person of interest,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference on Monday. “He matches the description of the person we are looking for.”

At a preliminary arraignment hearing in Pennsylvania, Mangione was charged with two felonies — forgery and carrying a firearm without a license — as well as three misdemeanor charges for tampering with records or identification, possessing instruments of crime and providing false identification to law enforcement, NBC News reported.

Mangione was later charged with one count of murder, three counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of possession of a forged instrument in New York, according to court documents obtained by the outlet.

During his arraignment hearing, Mangione told the judge that he has “no drug or mental health problems that the court needs to know about,” CNN reported. He also addressed the $8,000 in U.S. cash and $2,000 in foreign currency that he was found with, stating, “I don’t know where that money came from. I’m not sure if it was planted.”

Thompson was shot at approximately 6:45 a.m. on December 4 while on his way to the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan for a shareholder’s meeting. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The shooting suspect, who wore a mask and a hood, gunned down the CEO assassination-style and fled the scene on foot before riding an e-scooter into Central Park. He left behind a backpack containing Monopoly money and a jacket.

The New York City Police Department later shared surveillance photos in which the suspect’s face was partially visible. The photos were taken at HI New York City Hostel on Amsterdam Avenue near 104th Street in Manhattan, where the suspect had checked in on November 24. He later checked out on November 29 but checked in again the following day with a fake New Jersey ID.
