It’s safe to say Tupac Shakur was one of the most influential rappers of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, and with the upcoming release of the new biopic All Eyez on Me, fans are beginning to reflect on the late rapper’s tragic murder.

So how old was Tupac when he was shot?

On the night of September 7, 1996, 14 shots were fired into a car, six of which hit Tupac. The rapper was riding in the passenger seat and Marion Hugh Knight, Jr. aka Suge Knight, the Death Row Records founder, was driving. On September 13, after being hospitalized, Tupac ultimately passed away at the age of 25 due to the injuries he sustained.

Though this drive-by shooting is one of the most talked about Hollywood murders in modern history, there is still a tremendous amount of mystery surrounding it, and no one has ever been arrested for Tupac’s murder. It’s because of this mystery that shows like the upcoming A&E limited series Who Killed Tupac? are such a huge hit with fans.

Just this year, Suge, who was with Tupac the night of his fatal shooting, came forward and claimed to have known the culprits in the shocking murder.

In an affidavit, Suge alleged the shooters were attempting to murder him, not Tupac, as his ex-wife and a Death Row Records security chief were the ones who pulled the trigger.

The statement revealed that Suge has “known for many years that Reggie Wright Jr. and his ex-wife Sharitha were behind the murder of Tupac and attempted murder of Knight.” According to Suge, this was a plot to take control of the record company.

Though Suge assures that this story is true, there is still no firm conviction as to who was behind the murder that night. Some theories include that Suge himself was behind the shooting while others point to East Coast rival Notorious B.I.G., and some allege that Pac faked his death and is living out his life in Cuba.

These days, Suge is in jail awaiting sentencing on an unrelated murder charge.
