Gayle King is looking back at one major sacrifice she made during her marriage — and she now sees it as a warning sign she should not have ignored.
During a Friday, May 22, segment on CBS Mornings, the longtime broadcaster opened up about how much she loves dogs. According to People, the conversation took a personal turn when King revealed that her ex-husband, William Bumpus, did not approve of pets during their marriage.
“I love that you are calling this series ‘Life is Better with Dogs,’ because my ex-husband didn’t like dogs,” King, 71, said during the segment, per the report. “As a matter of fact, I had to get rid of my dog — which should have been a clue. Shouldn’t it have been a clue? Go ahead, speak on it! I’m still a little bitter!”

King married Bumpus in 1982. The former couple share two children together: daughter Kirby, 40, and son William Jr., 39. Their marriage ended after she discovered him in bed with another woman in 1990, though the divorce was not finalized until three years later.
In 2016, Bumpus publicly apologized. “I have been haunted with this life altering choice,” Bumpus said in a statement to Page Six through his rep, Lisa Nkonoki. He also praised King as a “great wife, an excellent mother and a fantastic co-parent.”
