Fans Slam Derick Dillard for Reading An “Old-Fashioned Text” to His Kids and Not a Children’s Book

Another day, another Derick Dillard controversy! The former Counting On star — who was fired from the hit TLC show in November — took to social media on Dec. 24 to share a seemingly sweet moment with his boys. “Christmas Eve, reading the Christmas story with my boys,” he wrote on Instagram. “Doesn’t get much better than that! Thank you Jesus! #ilovemyfamily #merrychristmas.” Almost immediately, however, fans began criticizing his reading choice.

“Kids like kid’s books, not old-fashioned text,” one person wrote. “Fine if you want to read them the nativity story, but at least do it in a format that they understand. Kids like pictures.” A second added, “What a boring story for a kid.”

Others, however, came to Derick’s defense. “I’m not really a religious person. Most normal, everyday, average people I know DO read the Christmas story out of the Bible on Christmas to their children and some not even really religious people do also. There is nothing abnormal about this and how they read the Christmas story [on] Christmas Eve. I am sure the Duggars have children’s books as well but to come to someone’s page and tell them how to raise their children — takes much gall. Wow.” A second commented, “We have been doing that same tradition since we became parents also. Merry Christmas!”

Unfortunately, this isn’t the 28-year-old’s first rodeo when it comes to controversy. Earlier this month, the TLC alum was accused of using the money he raised for a new ministry on dinner, and people weren’t holding back their opinions. “Did y’all pay for that with your GoFundMe money?” one person wrote in the comment section. Another added, “These people supposedly have money from the show, so why start a GoFundMe page?” A third quipped, “Are you sure you should be eating out? A homosexual may have made the sundae or own the restaurant.”

In November, Derick launched a GoFundMe page, asking for a total of $10,000. “I am currently serving through a program at my home church, called the Cross Church School of Ministry! I am so excited about this incredible opportunity for further ministry development, and I would like to invite you to share in this excitement with me,” the anti-trans reality TV exile wrote. Sigh, maybe if he didn’t get fired, he wouldn’t have to beg for money! Just a thought. ?

Counting On returns this spring.
