Convicted child abuser Jodi Hildebrandt‘s emails to a former client reveal how she was able to convince the woman she was God-like, the victim’s former father-in law explains.
In In Touch‘s exclusive sneak peek a clip of Investigation Discovery’s The Curious Case of … Jodi Hildebrandt the ex-husband of one of Jodi’s former clients shared how Jodi, 55, came between him and his wife, becoming “like a drug” to his spouse.
“Look here was a little note from my ex,” Adam Steed, the ex-husband of counselor Jodi’s former client said while holding up a piece of paper.
Adam read aloud, “I love you. I’ll stop focusing on myself so much. It doesn’t represent how I truly feel about you. I love you, I love you, I love you,” showing how his ex-wife wrote the phrase many times down the length of the page in several columns.
“This this was our life before Jodi Hildebrandt,” he wistfully recalled.

A photo was shown next of Adam and his wife on their wedding day, although her face was blurred out under brunette locks, a veil and a white wedding gown.
“My wife wanted Jodi’s approval of everything she did. She lost the ability to know for herself if something was right. What Jodi wanted was like a drug for her,” Adam stated in a confessional.
“These are emails between Jodi and Adam’s ex-wife,” Adam’s father, Paul Steed, said while flipping through a binder of the printed-out pages.
Paul read aloud, “Dear Jodi, our conversation this morning reminded me of the scripture when Jesus said my sheep hear my voice. I wanted to express my gratitude to you for being his voice in my good life.”
Paul concluded, “In other words, Jodi represents God,” to his former daughter-in-law.
“When I read the emails between Jodi and my ex now, it sounded like they were talking about like a sexual arousal kind of experience,” Adam explained.

He added, “My ex starts talking to Jodi about feeling blood in her like in her cheeks and this euphoric feeling and it feels so good.”
The Curious Case Of… Jodi Hildebrandt follows the story of how the Utah therapist’s crusade against masturbation drove “a wedge between couples in crisis, the dark alliance she forms with Mormon mommy vlogger Ruby Franke, and the horrifying 911 call that exposes the depths of their bizarre beliefs,” according to the episode’s description.
Ruby, 43, began working as a mental health coach for Jodi’s counseling company, ConneXions, in 2022. The duo began cohosting a podcast called “Connexions,” and running an Instagram account together called “Moms of Truth” and offering parenting classes.
The former “8 Passengers” mom vlogger and her husband, Kevin Franke, rose to fame documenting life with their six children. The family were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In 2020, Ruby was accused of child abuse after it was revealed she made oldest son Chad sleep on a beanbag for seven months as punishment for pulling a prank on his younger brother. Other punishments handed out by Ruby emerged, including withholding food and threatening to behead a stuffed animal.
On August 30, 2023, Utah police were called after Ruby’s “emaciated” then-12-year-old son, Russell, was found with “open wounds and duct tape around the extremities” after he left Jodi’s house and asked a neighbor for food and water.
Ruby’s then-10-year-old daughter, Eve, was soon found in “similar physical condition” at Jodi’s home, and both children were transported to a local hospital. Authorities determined that the boy and girl had been staying with Jodi, though it’s unclear for how long, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. Russell and Eve, along with two of Ruby’s other minor children, were placed into state custody at that time.
On September 5, 2023, Ruby and Jodi were each charged with six felony counts of child abuse. Each count carried a sentence of one to 15 years in prison, and a fine up to $10,000. A judge denied them bail due to “the severity of the [kids’] injuries,” according to court records.
Ruby pleaded guilty to four of the six charges of aggravated child abuse against her on December 18, 2023. Before entering her final guilty plea, Ruby expressed her “deepest regret and sorrow for [her] family and [her] children.”
On December 27, 2023, Jodi also pleaded guilty to four of the six felony counts of second-degree aggravated child abuse against her. The remaining two counts were dismissed by the Utah judge who accepted her plea agreement.
Both women are serving four-to-30-year sentences at the Utah State Correctional Facility in Salt Lake City, Utah.
