20/20’s Amy Robach Breaks Silence After Private Jeffrey Epstein Comments Leak: ‘I Was Upset’

She’s speaking out. On November 5, a video was published featuring ABC News anchor Amy Robach. In the footage, Robach seemed frustrated over an unaired 2015 interview she did with Virginia Roberts Giuffre about Jeffrey Epstein — who Roberts Giuffre accused of sexual misconduct. Now, Robach, 46, released a statement regarding that video.

“As a journalist, as the Epstein story continued to unfold last summer, I was caught in a private moment of frustration,” Robach said on Tuesday. “I was upset that an important interview I had conducted with Virginia Roberts didn’t air because we could not obtain sufficient corroborating evidence to meet ABC’s editorial standards about her allegations.”

The anchor continued, “The interview itself, while I was disappointed it didn’t air, didn’t meet our standards. In the years since no one ever told me or the team to stop reporting on Jeffrey Epstein, and we have continued to aggressively pursue this important story.”

Robach claimed in the video that she had the interview with Roberts Giuffre for “years,” but the network “would not put it on the air.” ABC News responded to the video in a statement, “At the time, not all of our reporting met our standards to air, but we have never stopped investigating the story. Ever since we’ve had a team on this investigation and substantial resources dedicated to it. That work has led to a two-hour documentary and six-part podcast that will air in the new year.”

In the video, a clearly annoyed Robach stated, “First of all, I was told, ‘Who’s Jeffrey Epstein? No one knows who that is. This is a stupid story.’ Then the palace found out that we had her whole allegations about Prince Andrew and threatened us a million different ways. We were so afraid that we wouldn’t be able to interview Kate [Middleton] and [Prince] Will. That also quashed the story … It was unbelievable what we had.”

Epstein was an infamous former financier accused of sexually abusing underage girls. In May 2006, Epstein was charged with multiple counts of unlawful sex acts with a minor and in June 2008, he appeared in court to plead guilty on two lesser counts. He was sentenced to 18 months in jail and was required to register as a sex offender as well.

Then, in July 2019, Epstein was arrested and indicted for sex trafficking of underage girls. He pleaded not guilty and faced up to 45 years in prison if he was convicted. But on August 20, 2019, Epstein was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell of an apparent suicide, according to the New York Times.

Robach added in the leaked video, “I tried for three years to get it on to no avail and now it’s all coming out and it’s like these new revelations. And I freaking had all of it. I’m so pissed right now. Every day I get more and more pissed … What we had was unreal.”
