So, Who Is Nick Godejohn? Here’s What You Need to Know About Gypsy Blanchard’s Ex-Boyfriend

Who is this guy, really? Hulu’s new TV series The Act TV depicts the story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. She was accused of killing her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, after Dee Dee treated her like a helpless child and kept her bound in a wheelchair for much of her life — despite the fact that she was not as ill as her mother let on. But it also features another important player in Gypsy’s story: Nicholas Godejohn, her now ex-boyfriend.

Godejohn, 29, was found guilty in November 2018 of first-degree murder for being a co-conspirator to the crime. But who is he, exactly, and where is he now?

Who is Gypsy Rose’s Boyfriend?

Blanchard and Godejohn aren’t together now, because they’re both in jail. But he was an important part of her story and the murder of Dee Dee. As shown in The Act, Blanchard fell for Godejohn online, and she supposedly enlisted his help to kill her mother. After Dee Dee’s body was discovered, Blanchard and Godejohn were found in Wisconsin and they were both charged for her murder.

But who was he before all that? Oxygen reported that Godejohn’s first run-in with the law actually happened when he was allegedly caught watching pornography in a McDonald’s in 2013. Customers reportedly complained that he was fondling himself during the lengthy session, but Godejohn claimed he was just scratching himself. During that arrest, police also allegedly found a large folding knife on Godejohn.

The site also reported that Psychologist Kent Franks testified at a 2016 hearing that Godejohn has more of a mind like a child than an adult, according to a 2016 report by KY3 in Springfield, Missouri. Two mental evaluations also found that Godejohn might be on the autism spectrum with an IQ of 82 and the functionality of a 10-year-old.

Did Dee Dee Know Godejohn?

At first, Blanchard and Godejohn tried to hide their relationship from Dee Dee, The Guardian reported in August 2017. According to the outlet, Godejohn and Blanchard met in person in early 2015 for a screening of Cinderella at a local cinema, and Blanchard went with her mother and planned to make it seem like she was just meeting Godejohn for the first time. They reportedly consummated their relationship in the bathroom, and when Blanchard got out, Dee Dee was furious and told her she wasn’t allowed to see Godejohn again.

Did Godejohn Handle the Murder?

Oxygen reported that Blanchard actually stole the knife used to kill Dee Dee from Walmart and gave it to Godejohn. However, regardless of who supplied the weapon, Godejohn was found guilty of actually stabbing Blanchard’s mother, according to the Springfield News-Leader.

How Long Will Godejohn Be in Jail?

Godejohn was sentenced to life in prison in February 2019 at his trial, according to KOLR10 News. The Springfield News-Leader reported that he has no possibility for parole. Prosecutors didn’t pursue the death penalty, but he will probably never be a free man ever again.

By comparison, in July 2016, Blanchard made a plea deal with prosecutors and agreed to plead guilty to a second-degree murder charge in exchange for a 10-year sentence. She once told Dr. Phil, “To be honest, I have complicated feelings about [it]. … I believe firmly that, no matter what, murder is not okay. But at the same time, I don’t believe I deserve as many years as I got.” Well, she got fewer than Godejohn did, at least.

How Does Godejohn Feel About Blanchard Now?

In an exclusive interview with ABC News in January 2018, Godejohn said Blanchard “was basically the mastermind behind it all [and] I was basically a hired hit man in its own weird sense.” He added, “I loved Gypsy to the point where I would … do anything for her. I’ve proven that with what I did. Unfortunately, because of how far I went, I feel as if she’s betrayed me. I feel that she’s abandoned me.”

Godejohn claimed Blanchard handed him gloves, a knife and duct tape, according to ABC News. But as much as he might try to say Blanchard orchestrated the whole thing, he did admit to police that he stabbed Dee Dee while his girlfriend hid in the bathroom. And he’ll be paying for that crime for the rest of his life.
