The troubling story of the Carter family will be told in the new documentary The Carters: Hurts to Love You. Backstreet Boys bandmate Nick Carter and his sister Angel Carter Conrad will open up about their painful past and their nationwide fame in the documentary, which will shed light on the heartbreaking deaths of their siblings Aaron Carter, Leslie Carter and Bobbi Jean Carter.

In Touch shares what to expect from the upcoming two-part documentary, including the trailer, premiere date and more.

What Is ‘The Carters: Hurts to Love You’ About?

According to the press release, the documentary will take a “deeply personal look at the soaring success and heartbreaking struggles of a family propelled into the spotlight by the meteoric rise of the musical careers of two brothers, Nick Carter (Backstreet Boys) and the late pop sensation Aaron Carter.”

Soleil Moon Frye directed the documentary with the help of Angel and Nick, who reflect on their traumatic childhood that was overlooked by fame and fortune.

“[Angel] discusses the pain, fame, expectations, addiction, assumptions and at the heart of it all, critical mental health issues faced by the family, with the hope to honor their journey and transform their past into a message of hope and purpose for others encountering similar challenges,” the press release continues.

In addition to Nick and Angel’s anecdotes, fans will see what their life was like growing up through unseen home videos and photos.

Who Appears In ‘The Carters’?

In addition to Nick and Angel, Aaron’s friends, Mellisa Joan Hart and Scout Willis, and longtime manager Lori Knight will appear on the show.

The New Trailer Shows How the Carter Family Coped With Grief

The emotional trailer for the documentary was released on March 20, 2025, and flashed throughout Aaron’s life from a bright-eyed little boy to a struggling adult.

As Aaron’s twin, Angel shared that she wanted to be his voice following his death in November 2022 and share the “chaos and fear, sadness” when the spotlight was off of her brother.

“When we were babies, Aaron was always smiling,” Angel said to the camera. “He loved performing for people, so Aaron got into singing because he saw Nick singing. But imagine being a child and working like an adult, having your childhood taken away from you.”

Home videos and photos of Aaron flashed on the screen, which slowly showed his constant bright smile fade as he reached heightened fame during his teen years.

A clip of family matriarch Jane Elizabeth Carter played as she told a young Nick, “You should tell the truth before you go to bed or you could die in your sleep.”

Meanwhile, the Sabrina the Teenage Witch actress described Aaron as a “beautiful boy” who had “so much to live for.”

Aaron’s friend Scout, daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, was teary-eyed as she said he had “pressure on him as a child” and “was so lonely and so much longing for real love.”

Nick, who said “fame and money destroyed [their] family,” had an emotional oncamera conversation with Angel that ended with them warmly embracing each other with a hug.

Later in the trailer, Angel also expressed how her late twin “wanted to be loved,” which led him into his “spiral.”

How Did Aaron, Leslie and Bobbi Jean Carter Die?

Leslie, the third oldest Carter sibling, died of a drug overdose at age 25 in January 2012.

Aaron, the youngest sibling, died ten years later at age 34 after accidentally drowning with difluoroethane, a gas in air spray cleaners, and alprazolam, a generic form of Xanax, in his system.

In December 2023, the second oldest sibling Bobbi passed away from fentanyl and methamphetamine intoxication at age 41.

When Does ‘The Carters’ Premiere?

The Carters: Hurts to Love You two-part documentary will be available to stream on April 15, 2025, on Paramount+.
