The OceanGate Titan tragedy, where five people aboard a submersible died when it imploded on its way down to the Titanic wreckage on the ocean floor, made headlines around the world in June 2023. More than one year later, The Coast Guard’s Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) held hearings to examine the investigation into the incident and ensure that such a tragedy would never happen again. Now, Netflix is exploring the incident once more in an upcoming documentary called Titan.

When Is the Release Date for Netflix’s ‘Titan’ Documentary?

The streaming service announced Titan along with seven other documentaries in January 2025. Netflix teased that it would arrive later in 2025 and on May 22, the streamer revealed that it would premiere on June 11.

What Is Netflix’s ‘Titan’ Documentary About?

Titan will take a closer look at OceanGate CEO and cofounder Stockton Rush, who was one of the five passengers aboard the submersible when it imploded, and “his quest to become the next billionaire innovator,” according to a post on Netflix’s Tudum. Of course, it will also explore “the doomed underwater endeavor that forced the world to reconsider the price of ambition in the depths of the ocean.”

In a statement to Tudum, director Mark Monroe explained, “When the Titan submersible went missing, I was horrified and mesmerized by the 24/7 news coverage and global social commentary — just like the rest of the world.”

He continued, “There was no context for what could have happened to those onboard, and the only touchpoint was the Titanic, a story that’s now become a grim fairy tale. The more I dug into this terrible tragedy, the more intrigued I became about how this could have ever happened in the first place, and who exactly was the man who built and then went down with this ship. We hope that this film can help provide answers to these very questions.”

Is There a Trailer for Netflix’s ‘Titan’ Documentary?

The trailer for the Titan documentary dropped on May 22, 2025, and it featured a few different people giving commentary about Rush. One man said that while there was “no way of knowing when the Titan would fail,” it was a “mathematical certainty that it would fail.” Another felt as though Rush was only interested in “fame” and “fueling his ego.”

The Titan documentary trailer also showed clips of the submersible out on the water and shots of Rush, who wanted to “restart tourist visits to the Titanic.”

What Happened to the OceanGate Titan?

On June 18, 2023, the OceanGate Titan departed on an underwater expedition to visit the remnants of the RMS Titanic. The submersible needed its mother ship, the Polar Prince, to guide it back to the surface, but the Polar Prince lost contact with the Titan nearly two hours into the voyage. OceanGate, a privately owned company that offered crewed submersibles, contacted the Coast Guard to conduct a search.

Four days later, the Coast Guard announced that an ROV had found debris that was that was “consistent with a catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber. Upon this determination, we immediately notified the families.” It was also revealed that the Titan did not make it to the Titanic remnants, as the sub’s tail cone was found “approximately 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic.”

In September 2024, photos and video footage from the OceanGate Titan wreckage were released as part of the MBI’s hearings about the incident. The final messages between the Polar Prince and the Titan, where the mother ship asked for better communication from the sub after not hearing from them for 15 minutes, were also shared.

Who Were the Victims in the OceanGate Titan Implosion?

The Titan wreckage was recovered from the ocean floor and transported to St. John’s in Newfoundland, Canada, in late June 2023. The Coast Guard announced that they had discovered “presumed human remains that have been carefully recovered within the wreckage at the site of the incident.”

In addition to Rush, the passengers aboard the Titan were deep sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, British businessman Hamish Harding, Pakistani businessman and philanthropist Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son, Suleman Dawood.
