James Blunt Reacts to Online Sleuths Attempting to Link Him to Hayden Panettiere Statements

James Blunt is pushing back against online speculation attempting to link him to a disturbing encounter the late Hayden Panettiere described in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.

The “You’re Beautiful” singer, 52, shared a post from the WTF With Dean Piper Substack on X, featuring the eyeballs emoji, after social media users began speculating that Blunt was the unnamed British singer-songwriter Panettiere was allegedly put in a room with on a yacht when she was 18.

The Scream 4 star, who died on August 16 at the age of 36, never identified the man as Blunt in her memoir.

However, in the book, Panettiere recalled being on a superyacht in the South of France when an unnamed female friend led her to a private cabin, where a famous British singer-songwriter in his 30s was waiting. The Heroes alum said her friend encouraged her to get into bed with the man, but she refused and ultimately left the boat.

Following Panettiere’s death, online sleuths began attempting to identify the unnamed singer, with some focusing their attention on Blunt.

British journalist Dean Piper, who covered Blunt and Panettiere together in Cannes in 2009, addressed the growing speculation in a post on his Substack on Sunday, August 23.

“Here lies the problem with the Wild West of internet chatter,” Piper wrote. “Facts don’t matter. Legalities don’t matter. People are saying whatever they like and getting away with it and that is wrong.”

The journalist argued that the timeline doesn’t support the theory that Blunt was the man Panettiere described.

In her book, the former Nashville star said she was 18 at the time of the incident. However, she was 19 when she and Blunt were photographed together at the amfAR charity event in Cannes in May 2009 and again on a boat the following day.

Piper also pointed out that in Panettiere’s account, she said she hadn’t met the unnamed singer on the boat and left the yacht after the alleged incident, which he argued her subsequent public appearances with Blunt wouldn’t make sense.

“And as she says she hadn’t met the man before the incident, and that she fled the boat immediately after, it takes nothing to work out that the cabin incident was the first and last time she met the man,” Piper wrote.

Blunt shared Piper’s post amid the online speculation.

Panettiere previously spoke about the experience on the yacht while promoting her memoir.

“To be walked down the stairs … it was presented as though it was a surprise,” she said during a May appearance on the Jay Shetty Podcast. “It was a very small room, and [the female friend] physically put me in the bed next to this undressed man who was very famous and had his hands like this [behind his head], like this was just an average day for him.”

The Remember the Titans actress also spoke about her decision not to identify the people in the situation when writing her book in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“It was a bad look for them and [the other people I didn’t name] were generally people within my industry. They’re people I could run into again. I didn’t want to put myself in that position,” Panettiere explained.
