Heath Ledger’s Only Daughter Matilda, 20, ‘Enjoys the Anonymity’ of Her ‘Very Secretive’ Upbringing

After the shocking death of late Oscar winner Heath Ledger at 28 years old in January 2008, his only daughter, Matilda — whom he shares with actress Michelle Williams — grew up outside of the spotlight.

Now, in a Wednesday, March 18, Daily Mail report, details of the 20-year-old’s life are coming to light, including how she may reconnect with her late father’s family in Australia.

“Matilda is in constant contact with Heath’s family and is literally a phone call away at all times,” a source told the publication, noting that she’s been “very close” with her father’s side despite being 2 years old when he died from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.

According to the source, Matilda “is eager to visit them and vice versa as often as possible,” and she may even consider a temporary move to Australia to study.

However, a Mail source pointed out, “She does feel as if she would miss New York though, so decisions are still being made on when to go over and for how long.”

The Daily Mail reported that Matilda lives in Brooklyn with the Dawson’s Creek actress, 45 — who shares three other children with her second husband, Hamilton director Thomas Kail — and is just like any other young adult in the hipster neighborhood of New York.

“Matilda wouldn’t have it any other way,” a source told the publication. “She enjoys the anonymity she is usually blessed with. Her friends are real, her life is great.”

“It might sound boring but she is your typical, young girl, loves being on her phone, hanging with friends and just loves living life,” the source continued. “She is exceptionally polite and people love to be around her. She is very easy to get along with.”

While she reportedly loves to read, enjoys playing chess and is considered a “foodie,” a source told the Mail, “She still is trying to figure out what she would like to do for a career. But it isn’t going to be acting. She wants to leave that to her mom.”

It would seem as though Matilda doesn’t need to make any rash decisions about the future, as Ledger’s father, Kim, previously revealed that she inherited the late Brokeback Mountain star’s multimillion-dollar estate.

For now, Matilda reportedly enjoys being a big sister to her three stepsiblings.

“Although some might think that the drastic age range could be a conflict to really getting to know her siblings, she is making sure that she will be there as a great big sister and, more importantly, a great babysitter when needed,” a source said.

“The family keeps things very secretive, very tight knit, but one thing is for sure, Matilda is excited for her mom and Thomas,” the source added. “Their whole family is ecstatic right now and Matilda is ready to help out in any way needed.”
