The 34-year-old, who served more than 7 years for her role in the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, before being released on parole in December 2023, sat down with host Charlie Neff on The TMZ Podcast to weigh in on Shirilla’s case.
As In Touch previously reported, Shirilla, 21, is currently incarcerated at the Ohio Reformatory for Women after being found guilty of murdering her boyfriend Dominic Russo and his friend Davion Flanagan in a 2022 car crash. Shirilla maintains she is innocent.
After watching the Netflix documentary The Crash, Blanchard believes a major emotional reckoning is still ahead of Shirilla. “The time that she’s in prison right now she needs to grow up and take accountability,” she said on the podcast on Friday, May 29.

“Remorse is something that maybe isn’t coming natural right now because maybe it’s something that she hasn’t dealt with internally and emotionally but it’s going to hit her like a train,” Blanchard continued. “And when that happens she needs to take those steps to do what she needs to do to make amends with the victims family and it’s on them if they want to forgive her. They don’t have to forgive her by any means.”
When it comes to whether Shirilla should be building any kind of public platform, Blanchard was blunt. “I think that Mackenzie should not benefit from social media or any other kind of avenue,” she said on the podcast.
While she made clear she supports crime victims’ rights to tell their stories, she drew a firm line in this particular case.
“I don’t feel like victims of abuse should be kept silent,” Blanchard said. “They should be able to tell their story in a book or a documentary, or however they want to.”
“But there is no mitigating evidence in this specific case, there is no abuse, there is no sympathetic story behind it, for that to be okay,” she added. “So in her case specifically, no I don’t think she should monetize, no I don’t think she should be an influencer on social media.”
