Her win was a triumph, her acceptance speech a high point of the night. Demi Moore delivered a powerful message at the Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills on January 5 as she accepted a Best Actress trophy for her performance in The Substance. “I’ve been doing this a long time — like, over 45 years — and this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor,” the “humbled” star, 62, told the audience.

After a producer branded her a “popcorn actress” 30 years earlier, she’d grown to believe she wasn’t worthy of accolades. “That corroded me over time,” she said, explaining she was at such “a low point” a few years ago that she thought her career was over. Then she read the body-horror movie’s script, “and the universe told me, ‘You’re not done.’”

Demi’s success, however, has been tinged with sorrow. “She’s told friends she’s had one of the best and worst years of her life,” an insider exclusively tells In Touch. “After so long in the business, Hollywood has finally come to respect her. But it comes on the heels of Bruce’s devastating illness.” Though the Ghost actress and action star Bruce Willis, 69, ended their 10-year marriage in 1998, they became the closest of friends. When the Die Hard star was forced to retire from acting in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, a debilitating neurological condition that’s since progressed to frontotemporal dementia, Demi was a pillar of support. “She’s all smiles on the red carpet, but it’s a balancing act,” says the insider. “Bruce is constantly on her mind.”

STAYING STRONG

Demi acknowledges that the man she knew is gone. “The disease is what the disease is. And I think you have to be in real deep acceptance of what that is. But for where he’s at, he is stable,” she said in October 2024. “When we’re holding on to what was, I think it’s a losing game.”
Instead, she added, she’s learned to be thankful that she’s “able to share … whatever we have, for however long we have it.”

It’s taken a long time to find clarity. After beating a drug addiction in the ’80s and relapsing in her 40s while married to ex-husband No. 3, Ashton Kutcher, 46, the Brat Pack actress — who’s now a grandma (Rumer Willis has a 1-year-old daughter, Louetta, with a former boyfriend) — has been on a wild ride. “But Demi no longer wrestles with her demons,” says the insider. “She’s centered, focused, grateful and knows what’s important: family and health. She loves the person she’s become and is looking forward to the future. She’s never been more at peace.”
