Demi Moore shared a rare update about ex-husband Bruce Willis amid his battle with dementia.

“The disease is what the disease is. And I think you have to be in real deep acceptance of what that is,” Demi, 61, said while attending the 2024 Hamptons International Film Festival on Sunday, October 13, according to People. “But for where he’s at, he is stable.”

Demi – who was honored with the Career Achievement in Acting Award at the event – then shared advice she would give to someone that has a loved one with dementia. “What I always encourage is to just meet them where they’re at. When you’re holding on to what was, I think it’s a losing game,” she told the crowd. “But when you show up to meet them where they’re at, there is great beauty and sweetness.”

Bruce, 69, and Demi were married from 1987 to 2000, and they share daughters Rumer, 36, Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 30.

Despite not working out as a couple, the St. Elmo’s Fire star has remained close to Bruce and recalled visiting him with their granddaughter, Luetta, “two days ago.” She added that she was committed to “being able to share with whatever we have, for however long we have it.”

Fans first became aware of Bruce’s health issues when the Willis family announced that he had been battling aphasia in March 2022. The disorder “affects how you communicate” and can “impact your speech, as well as the way you write and understand both spoken and written language,” according to the Mayo Clinic.

Bruce’s wife, Emma Heming Willis, later announced in February 2023 that he received a more specific diagnosis of frontotemporal degeneration (FTD).

In July, an insider exclusively told In Touch that Demi “has vowed to stay by [Bruce’s] side” amid his health battle. “Her heart aches as he struggles with this horrible disease,” the source continued. “Demi knows that time is slipping away.”

According to the insider, Demi sees Bruce “at least once a week” and “she will never abandon him or let him down.”

The source added that Bruce had “good days and bad,” explaining that he “has speech impairments and can’t speak much at all.” The insider continued, “These days, his family senses what he’s saying, what he needs by a look.”

More recently, an additional source exclusively told In Touch in September that “the disease has progressed to the point where his family worries they may not have much more time with Bruce left.”

While the Sixth Sense star seems to be comfortable, the insider said that he is a different person than he was when he was healthy. “It’s heartbreaking for the family to see him so vulnerable and dependent,” the source shared. “The Bruce they remember used to be full of energy and masculine pride. Now he seems helpless.”

In addition to his three daughters with Demi, Bruce is also the father to daughters Mabel, 12, and Evelyn, 10, with Emma, 46.

On September 18, Tallulah opened up about her father’s health while appearing on Good Morning America.

After noting that Bruce was “stable,” Tallulah admitted his health scare had been a “hard” experience. “There’s painful days but there’s so much love. And it’s really shown me to not take any moment for granted and I really do think that we’d be best friends. I think he’s very proud of me,” she said.
