She finally said it. Kristen Stewart acknowledged that she seemed distant in the early days of her career. The actress since took time to reflect on her career growth and how the world perceived her.

In the September issue of Vanity Fair, Kristen, 29, told us that her shy ways were the cause of her skewed public image. “I think I’ve grown out of this, but I used to be really frustrated that because I didn’t leap willingly into being at the center of a certain amount of attention, that it seemed like I was an a-hole.” The former Twilight Saga star continued, “I am in no way rebellious. I am in no way contrarian. I just want people to like me.”

Since her days as Bella Swan, the actress has worked with award-winning actors and appeared in more serious films. She stated that getting those roles were a struggle due to her public image as a teen star. The starlet said that working on sophisticated projects like Personal Shopper, Clouds of Sils Maria and Certain Women allowed her to obtain a more accurate identity to the world.

“It gave me a chance to not weigh something down. It was so much bigger than me,” she continued. “My baggage was so minuscule in comparison to what [the directors] storylines are, as filmmakers. I was finally given a chance to be looked at, not as this thing in this celebrity-obsessed culture that was like, ‘Oh, that’s the girl from Twilight.’”

Kristen said it has been hard to show people who she truly is, especially since fans wanted her to be her Twilight character so badly. “Twi-hards” hoped her relationship with costar Robert Pattinson would continue off-screen, thus becoming a tabloid spectacle. She later discussed the rumors and the romance intrigue on SNL. Addressing Donald Trump’s tweets about her relationship, she stated, “And Donald, if you didn’t like me then, you’re probably not going to like me now, because I’m hosting SNL and I’m, like, sooo gay, dude.” She hopes that as she enters the next stages of her career she will not be thought of as an angsty teen sensation, but as a talented filmmaker.
