John Mulaney had an unexpectedly emotional parenting moment — right in the middle of Graceland.
Appearing on the Monday, March 30, episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Mulaney, 42, shared how he had to tell his 4-year-old son Malcolm that Elvis Presley is no longer alive.
“Malcolm… is a huge Elvis fan,” Mulaney said, explaining that his son was thrilled to visit the legendary singer’s home.
But things took a turn during the tour.
While exploring the famous Jungle Room, Malcolm innocently asked, “Dad, can I meet Elvis now?”
That’s when it hit Mulaney.

“Then I realized all his grandparents are alive and he’s never had a goldfish. And he doesn’t know… and he’s about to find out in the jungle room at Graceland that everybody dies, ” he joked.
Thinking fast, Mulaney gently broke the news. “I said, ‘Elvis is in heaven now,’” he recalled.
Malcolm, of course, had questions — and Mulaney delivered a very dad-style explanation that had the audience laughing.
“And I said, ‘Uh, well, sometimes when people are in their early 40s, and they have a job and schedule a lot like Daddy, and [have] some of the same issues as Daddy, they go to the bathroom and they go to heaven,’” he quipped.
