Love on the Spectrum takes fans on a sweet and emotional journey as it follows the ups and downs of dating life for individuals on the autism spectrum.

The hit reality series was first created by documentary producers Cian O’Clery and Karina Holden in Australia in 2019, and it eventually sparked a popular U.S. version in 2022. The Emmy Award-winning show has since been on for three seasons and has racked up an incredible fan base over those short years.

However, the show’s success has led some viewers to wonder if the cast members appear on the show for free or if they’ve made money from their work. In Touch rounds up everything to know about whether the Love on the Spectrum cast gets paid.

How Were the ‘Love on the Spectrum’ Cast Members Discovered?

Cian explained that they cast people to be on the show by developing relationships “with various organizations, support groups, communities and individuals, and just put the call out,” in an April 2024 interview with Parade.

“We send out flyers that explain who we are and what we’re doing, and if you’re interested in meeting with us and talking about it, get in touch,” he added. “Lots and lots of people write in.”

According to Cian, even after the episodes are filmed, the relationships between cast and crew still remain strong.

“It’s like a family,” he said at the time. “It’s amazing how close everyone’s become. It’s not one of those shows where you just film people and don’t see or talk to them again. It’s nice to be able to keep in touch with people; make sure they had a positive experience, and that they still feel like they’re part of the family.”

Do ‘Love on the Spectrum’ Stars Get Paid?

No. Cian has clarified in past interviews that the cast members do not get paid per episode like some other reality television stars.

Former cast member Kaelynn Partlow, who starred in the first season of the U.S. version of the series, also confirmed that she did not get paid while answering burning fan questions in an April 2025 Instagram reel.

“They were very up front about that being the case,” she clarified in the video. “It wasn’t a surprise.”

Are Love on the Spectrum’s Storylines Scripted?

Love on the Spectrum is a documentary reality show, not a scripted television show. In Kaelynn’s Q&A, she further revealed that the “only time I remember being directed” was when the camera operators accidentally missed an important shot.

“They’d ask me to repeat what I just did, like, over again.” she said in the Instagram video. “So, for example, if I walked down the stairs, but the camera wasn’t sitting at the exact right angle, I’d have to walk back up and come back down.”

Who Pays for ‘Love on the Spectrum’ Stars’ Dates?

While the cast members do not receive compensation for their appearances on the hit series, production does cover their filmed dates and travel-related expenses.

“People aren’t left out of pocket by being part of the experience, that’s all I can say,” Cian said to Parade.
