‘Descendants 3’ Cancelled Their Red Carpet Premiere to Donate the Money in Cameron Boyce’s Honor

Ever since Cameron Boyce’s tragic death due to a medical condition, his friends, family and costars have been paying tribute, and now so is Disney Channel. On Thursday, July 11, the network announced that they are cancelling the red carpet premiere for the actor’s movie musical Descendants 3. Instead of hosting that event, they’ll instead be honoring his legacy by making a charitable donation in his name. Good Morning America helped share the news on Twitter.

“We’re proud to be part of Cameron Boyce’s legacy by showcasing his talents on screen, but we are cancelling the red carpet premiere event for Descendants 3 scheduled for July 22,” read Disney Channel’s statement shared by GMA. “Instead, the Walt Disney Company will make a donation to the Thirst Project, a philanthropic organization to which Cameron was deeply committed. Thank you for understanding.”

The Thirst Project is a nonprofit organization that aims to end the global water crisis by building freshwater wells in developing communities. In the past, Good Morning America reports that Cameron had raised $30,000 for the charity, and he was even honored at their Thirst Gala with the Pioneering Spirit Award. “The Thirst Gala is one of my favorite events and I alwaysss leave inspired,” Cameron wrote on Instagram in April 2018. “I am humbled and honored and alllll the other words.”

The star was passionate about philanthropy, and even talked about “giving back” in his final interview. “There’s a long line of difference makers in my family,” the star, whose grandma was one of the Clinton 12, told Haute Living in May 2019. “I’m following in the footsteps of some really strong men and women who have showed me what it means to give back; it’s the greatest way to fulfill yourself. Every time I talk to someone who shares that similar passion, we talk about how there aren’t many feelings more euphoric. Changing someone else’s life positively changes yours for the better as well.”

A few days earlier, one of Cameron’s Descendants 3 costars, Dove Cameron, shared her own tearful tribute on Instagram. “Cameron was one of my favorite people alive in the world, though I know that’s not unique to me. Cameron was magic. An earth angel,” she said in a series of emotional videos. “He was undoubtedly the most talented person most of us will ever know but what was special about Cameron was who he was in the small moments when maybe no one was looking. … Cameron was the ultimate example of a human being.”
