Wait, the Duggars Are Cool With Birth Control? Derick Dillard Debunks a Family Rule

One of the most well-known facts about the Duggars is that they don’t believe in birth control, but now Derick Dillard is trying to debunk that myth. In the past, the famous family swore off contraceptives after they blamed the pill for Michelle Duggar‘s first miscarriage, the son they would’ve named Caleb after having Josh Duggar. Now, however, daughter Jill Duggar‘s husband is letting fans in on the secret that not all of the married kids feel the same way that the Counting On parents do. According to him, he and his wife have no problem with birth control at all.

The discussion started after Derick, 30, advised married couples to have sex “5-6 times (or more) a week [as] a good start” to keeping their marriage alive. Shocked, one fan wrote back, “How are you guys having sex 5-6 times a week and you aren’t pregnant again?? You guys don’t believe in birth control so there are some lies in this somewhere. Lol.” That’s when the father of two dropped the Duggar-rule-debunking bombshell.

“We never said we don’t believe in birth control,” he told the fan. “Misconception (no pun intended) #547324. My parents waited 11 years to start having kids, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Each Christian family should follow God’s leading for their own family, regarding when and how many kids to have.”

That narrative seems to contradict what we already know about the couple, though. Back in 2014, while chatting with ABC News, they said they wanted “as many kids as God will give [them],” which is typical for the family. For Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar, that meant eschewing birth control and accepting that, if and when they got pregnant, that was God’s will. That seems to be what all of the other couples have meant when they tied the knot, too.

So did things change for Jill and Derick after having baby No. 2? Or did they just find some loophole in the fact that no contraception is actually 100% effective, so there’s still a little wiggle room for God to give them kids anyway? Unless another fan decides to get all up the Dillards’ business, we may never know exactly how things shook out, but here’s what we do know: Those rumors that Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo were (also?) using birth control just got a whole lot more believable.
