“I told them I was 21, but I was 29,” Carteris, now 65, said during a recent appearance on the Still Here Hollywood podcast while recalling her audition for the show.
Carteris’ age was a frequent topic of discussion among fans during the show’s run because she was nearly 30 when she was cast as 16-year-old Andrea Zuckerman.
However, fans called her out for the lie when she talked about the audition on the Still Here Hollywood podcast.
“Not sure who she thought she was fooling or that it wasn’t already public knowledge about how old she was. We knew you weren’t 21,” one critic wrote in the comments section on Instagram.

Another added, “I’m sorry. Everybody knew she was 30. Luke Perry was old, too, but does she really think we didn’t know? Who’s going to tell her?”
A third person joked, “She auditioned to be on Golden Girls the same day as 90210. Betty White got her part.”
This wasn’t the first time the Surreal Life alum has spoken about the fib that led to her most well known role.
“When I got the role, a lawyer told me I could sign a contract and state a different age, as long as it was over the age of 21,” she previously told People in 2019. “When [my real age] did come out, the show was just starting to take off and my character was established enough that they did not fire me. But a producer did say to me, ‘You’re lucky we didn’t know your age when we hired you.'”
