Abby Phillip, who anchors CNN NewsNight and CNN Saturday Morning Table for Five, is making waves at the network.
After the New York Post reported (via Status) that CNN is testing a new streaming talk show hosted by the 37-year-old journalist tentatively titled “Confessions and Obsessions,” a source told journalist Rob Shuter that there is “a noticeable power shift happening inside CNN.”
“Abby has become management’s favorite, and everyone at the network knows it,” the insider said in a Friday, May 29, report of Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack.
According to the recent Status report, the potential new project would feature a rotating roundtable of guests who come with both a “confession” and an “obsession.”
The reported move has CNN staples like Anderson Cooper and Kaitlan Collins — who typically focus on politics and hard news — taking notice.

“Anderson has been the face of CNN for decades, and Kaitlan was widely viewed as the future of political coverage,” another source told Shuter. “Now Abby is landing the premium projects, development deals, and executive attention.”
Under CEO Mark Thompson, the longstanding news organization is now expanding its digital footprint and trying out new things.
“CNN believes Abby feels smarter, fresher, and less polarizing,” a source said. “They see her as one of the few talents who can thrive once CNN changes ownership or the cable model disappears altogether.”
According to one of Shuter’s sources “Everyone notices where the investment is going. At CNN right now, Abby Phillip is the priority.”
Phillip, who graduated from Harvard, previously worked for Politico, The Washington Post and ABC News. She joined CNN in 2017.
