There’s nothing better for TV enthusiasts than getting immersed in the perfect new show – and there’s little worse than finding out that show has been canceled before its time!

In Touch rounds up which shows got the axe at Peacock this year, despite all having decent reviews from critics.

‘Based on a True Story’

Based on a True Story stars Big Bang Theory alum Kaley Cuoco and Argo actor Chris Messina as Ava and Nathan Bartlett, a married couple who hoped to solve their personal problems by capitalizing on “America’s obsession with true crime” and blackmailing a local serial killer into doing a podcast with them.

The dark comedy thriller premiered in 2023 and received an overall 79 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes from film and television critics. Even though season 2 ended in a major cliffhanger, Peacock chose not to renew it for a third season, so sadly, fans may never know what happened.

‘Mr. Throwback’

Mr. Throwback is a sports mockumentary that follows “an unfortunate memorabilia salesman (Adam Pally) who hopes to find forgiveness by reconciling with NBA legend Steph Curry, a teammate from his sixth-grade years.”

Other cast members include Saturday Night Live alum Ego Nwodim and The Afterparty’s Ayden Mayeri.

The series aired in August 2024 and season 1 was Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics score of 86 percent. It was canceled after the first six episodes.

The Hollywood Reporter said it got the axe due to lack of viewership. It was also criticized for not having enough “consistent three-pointers if not slam dunks” in the comedy aspects of the show, according to Blavity News.

‘Hysteria!’

This horror-comedy series revolves around a 1980s heavy metal band of high school outcasts living in a small town in Michigan. It all goes wrong when the band decides to start rumors that they are Satanic after the shocking murder of a local teenager, leading to a “leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.”

The ensemble cast includes Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Bruce Campbell (The Evil Dead), Anna Camp (True Blood), Emjay Anthony (Krampus), Chiara Aurelia (Cruel Summer) and more.

It was announced in February 2025 that it had been canceled after only one season.

According to Variety, the show was “well-received by critics” with a 91 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it “did not make an appearance on the weekly Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts upon its release.”

‘Teacup’

A second horror-themed series was also canceled at Peacock. Teacup follows a group of neighbors “trapped on a farm in rural Georgia,” who must learn to “put aside their differences and unite in the face of a mysterious and deadly threat,” the IMDb summary reads.

The lead cast featured The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Yvonne Strahovski, Grey’s Anatomy star Scott Speedman and the Twilight franchise’s Chaske Spencer.

Teacup premiered in October 2024, and similarly to Hysteria!, it also received praise from critics. It was Certified Fresh with a 77 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, it was canceled after one season after it reportedly received poor viewership numbers from its audience.
