“Spencer studies Trump like he cracked the code,” one source said. “He believes traditional politicians are boring, and that attention is now the most valuable currency in politics.”
Sources tell Shuter that where the Celebrity Big Brother alum shines is his ability to dominate the online conversation, referring to his viral “They Not Like Us” campaign ad, in which he claimed opponents Karen Bass and Nithya Raman, “don’t have to live in the mess they created.”
“That ad was the fulcrum moment,” a third source noted. “People stopped mocking Spencer and started realizing he may understand modern media better than anyone else running.”
As for the cost of the ad, Shuter pointed out that Pratt has said it was “zero dollars,” which, according to the second source, “terrified political consultants” as “he’s proving you don’t need huge money anymore if you know how to hijack attention.”

In an interview with CBS News published on Friday, Pratt said he “didn’t want to run for mayor,” initially, but after losing his home in the L.A. wildfires in 2025, the decision became clear.
“I had to step up so that my sons one day can … come back here and live in the L.A. that I lived in — beautiful, safe,” he told the outlet. “I’m standing in what happened because of failed politicians.”
