Sheriff in Nancy Guthrie Case Comes Under Fire for Resume ‘Discrepancies’ as ‘Errors’ Are Addressed

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, who has faced criticism throughout his handling of the ongoing Nancy Guthrie case, appeared to have errors in his résumé.

On Monday, March 9, the Arizona Republic (via multiple reports) obtained documents that reveal Nanos resigned in lieu of termination from the El Paso Police Department in 1982. The résumé posted on the agency’s website instead listed the date as 1984.

According to Newsweek, Nanos resigned to avoid being terminated for disciplinary issues, including insubordination and more, per records seen by Arizona Republic.

Nanos declined to explain the matter when asked for comment. “That’s your ‘urgent’ request? You sure you don’t want to go back to my high school and ask why I got swats from the principal?” he reportedly wrote back to the newspaper. “Good luck with your hit piece.”

In a statement to the Daily Express, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said, “The Pima County Sheriff’s Department recently identified two clerical errors in Sheriff Chris Nanos’ publicly posted resume.”

“Both date discrepancies were administrative in nature and were not intended to mislead or misrepresent Sheriff Nanos’ work history,” the statement continued. “For clarity, Sheriff Nanos served with the El Paso Police Department from 1976 to 1982. His service with El Paso PD concluded in 1982, not 1984 as previously stated. Additionally, Sheriff Nanos was promoted to the rank of captain in 2007, not 2009.”

The statement added that Nanos “has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the safety of the communities he serves.”

Nanos has been watched with a close eye since Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother was reported missing on February 1 by family members.

As the search is now in its sixth week, Nancy’s whereabouts remain unknown, and no suspects nor persons of interest have been announced.

Previous video footage released by authorities show a masked and “armed individual” appearing to tamper with the camera at Nancy’s front door the morning of her disappearance. She is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs around 150 pounds; she has brown hair and blue eyes.

The Today anchor, 54, previously announced that her family is offering a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to the recovery of Nancy. The FBI is also offering $100,000 for information leading to Nancy “and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved.”
