Jake, 34, penned a heartbreaking essay on Substack on Friday, April 24, over four months after Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found murdered in their home.
“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time,” Jake wrote. “It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream.”
The former television reporter added that one of the things he couldn’t stop thinking about was “how frightened they must have been.”
“They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them. They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world,” he continued, referring to his sister, Romy Reiner, and brother Nick Reiner who has been charged in the death of Rob and Michele.
In the essay, Jake included sweet photos of himself with his parents when he was younger, and he gushed about both his mom and dad. He called Michele “his confidant” and Rob “his hero.”

“We lost more than half of our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” Jake explained. “Sure, any loss of a parent is devastating, but nothing compares to losing both of them at the same time and, on top of that, having your brother be at the center of it.”
He shared that he understood when people were at a loss for words when speaking to him and admitted that there really was “nothing to say.”
“I just ask for love and compassion – the same principles my parents lived by,” Jake concluded.
On December 14, 2025, Romy, 28, made the gruesome discovery of Rob but, according to the New York Times, she fled the home before realizing that Michele was inside the home as well.
Later that same night, Nick, 32, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders. He pleaded not guilty on February 23 and remains in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility.
Nick is expected to appear in court next week for a preliminary hearing on April 29.
