Olivia Wilde still remembers the exact comment her ex-fiancé Jason Sudeikis made that sparked the end of their relationship.
On the Wednesday, June 17 segment of Alex Cooper‘s Call Her Daddy podcast, the 42-year-old director opened up about her past relationship with the Ted Lasso creator while discussing her new film The Invite.
“It’s no surprise to me that I ended up making a movie about relationships and the complexity of determining whether a relationship is over, because it is not an overnight process,” she began.
“It’s very difficult. And the idea that relationships can come to a place where you become strangers,” the actress added, before recalling when that moment occurred for her and Jason.
Before her 36th birthday in March 2020, the two had been having a “rough time for a while.” However, things had come to a head after her party that year.
She shared, “We were driving home from my birthday party my friends had had, and I said, ‘Did you give me a birthday present? And he said, ‘What would I get you, Olivia? I don’t know you.’
“He wasn’t wrong. We didn’t know each other anymore.”
She went on to explain the relationship had gotten to a place where they were no longer “engaging in the knowing of each other, in the curiosity about each other.”
“You find yourself in a place where you’re like, ‘I don’t even know you,'” the actress continued. “And that was a point. That was when we realized it was over.
“It was f—ing tough. It brought us to the place of like, ‘Okay, this is done. We’re going to end this,'” she added.
Their relationship ended shortly after that, however, the news hadn’t gone public until later that year.
Olivia and Jason were together for almost a decade before making the decision to split. During their seven-year engagement, they welcomed two children.
