There’s apparently a reason why Katherine Heigl, who appeared at a charity event held over the weekend at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, won’t address her political views.

The Grey’s Anatomy alum, 47 — who released a statement saying that politics had nothing to do with her involvement at the Wine, Women & Shoes Benefiting Big Dog Ranch Rescue event in Palm Beach, Florida — has stayed clear of taking a firm stance.

According to a Wednesday, March 11, report in the Daily Mail, a source claimed the “reason Katherine avoids political talk” is related to her turbulent history in Hollywood following her controversial exit from the hit ABC medical drama and earning a reputation of being difficult to work with.

“If she brought politics into the situation, she would inevitably alienate herself further,” the source claimed.

The insider pointed out that after “having been seen at Mar-a-Lago, people will talk,” but noted that Heigl “didn’t go because of any political leanings.”

Still, Heigl will “continue avoiding politics,” the source claimed, even though “she is outspoken when she has to be.”

“She mentioned in the past that she doesn’t understand politics,” the source said. “This was based on the fact she has friends who are a mix of Republicans and Democrats and she doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings with her political beliefs.”

As In Touch previously reported, the mother of three — who maintains a relatively low profile in Utah with her husband, Josh Kelley — issued a statement explaining why she felt the event was important.

“Animals don’t vote,” Heigl said. “The only room they don’t like is the euthanasia room at a shelter. They are completely at the mercy of us, and they have no voice of their own.”

“This event was about animal advocacy — something that has always been deeply personal to me,” she continued. “Anyone who knows me knows that protecting animals is one of my greatest passions.”

Heigl explained that she and her mother, Nancy, “spent years advocating for animals” through the Jason Heigl Foundation, which was established in 2008 in honor of her late brother, who died in 1986 following a car accident.

“As a society, we should all come together to protect the voiceless and the innocent,” Heigl said in the statement. “This should not be a polarizing issue.”
