He lives on through his music! Mac Miller unfortunately passed away at 26 years old in September 2018, and there was a chance that he could have won a Grammy. The late rapper’s latest album, Swimming, was posthumously nominated in the Best Rap Album category at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. However, Mac didn’t get to take home the coveted trophy, as Cardi B won.

Mac’s parents were at the ceremony in case their son won. “Malcom’s family was so moved when his nomination was announced,” a source close to the family told Us Weekly. “They are really hopeful that the Recording Academy will honor what they believe to be the most important and impactful rap album of the year.”

The other musical artists that were up for the award included Cardi B, Nipsey Hussle, Pusha T and Travis Scott. Since the Pittsburgh native didn’t win, his family hoped a special someone was victorious. “It will be a bittersweet moment for them if Malcolm wins,” the source continued. “And if he doesn’t, they’re rooting for Cardi B.” At least they got their second choice, right?

Mac’s toxicology report claimed that he had died from a combination of several drugs — fentanyl, cocaine and ethanol. The “Self Care” songwriter was always candid with his fans about how it wasn’t easy for him to get sober. “I had a drug problem for a long time,” Mac told Larry King in a September 2015 interview. “It wasn’t just in music, but I definitely was going through a drug problem and I think it was more my state of mind. I was just pretty depressed.”

He added, “I think it started [with success]. It’s funny, because you talk to people, and they say, ‘What do you have to be depressed about? You have money.’ Fame is tricky because you read what’s said about you, and you know what you know to be true, and the lines start to blur.”

Ever since Mac passed away, his ex Ariana Grande has posted various pictures of her late beau on social media. She captioned one video of herself with Mac, writing, “I adored you from the day I met you when I was nineteen and I always will. I can’t believe you aren’t here anymore. I really can’t wrap my head around it. We talked about this. So many times. I’m so mad, I’m so sad I don’t know what to do. You were my dearest friend. For so long. Above anything else.”

Unfortunately, the pop star wasn’t at the show, as she had conflicts with the producers.

We would have loved to see Mac get this award.
